If you’re heading off on holiday or a work trip this summer, here’s a simple tech tip that could save you money and keep you connected: consider using an eSIM.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of swapping out your physical SIM card, you leave it in your phone and add a temporary second mobile plan using just an app. This is especially handy when you’re travelling, because it allows you to get tons of data at local rates – without paying high roaming fees. This is a very inexpensive way to get lots of data on your phone.
Why it matters
Many people in Europe get some free roaming when travelling within the EU, but once you head further afield – to the US, Canada, Asia or beyond – roaming charges can get expensive quickly. If you’re away for a couple of weeks and want to stay online, a data plan for the country or region you’re in via an eSIM can be a big money-saver.
How it works
You set up an account with an eSIM provider (we’ve had good experiences with Airalo or Monty), choose your destination and data plan, and install the eSIM before you leave. Once you’re abroad, you simply turn off your primary line to avoid roaming, and use the eSIM for all your mobile data.
- no fiddling with SIM cards
- no shock bills when you get back
- tons of data to use without the risk of going over
This puts your phone in “data-only” mode, so things like FaceTime, WhatsApp, iMessage, maps and all your apps will keep working. You won’t be able to send or receive ‘green SMS texts’ or calls to your regular number while it’s off, but most people find that using internet-based apps does the trick.
If you’re worried about missing a call, you can just temporarily change your home voicemail and let people know to contact you by iMessage, WhatsApp, or email while you are away.
Quick checklist before you go:
- ✅ Make sure your phone supports eSIMs – the apps above will help you check
- ✅ Choose a provider (like Airalo or Monty) and buy a plan for your country or region (you can convert a whole continent if you want)
- ✅ Set up your eSIM with the instructions in the app and test it before your trip
- ✅ When you arrive, turn off your main SIM (primary line) so you don’t get charged for roaming
- ✅ Use Wi-Fi calling, FaceTime, iMessage or WhatsApp to stay in touch
