You’d be surprised how many people are still using passwords like password123 or qwerty. If that’s you, don’t worry – you’re not alone. But let’s change that.
A good password needs to do two things:
- Keep others out – so it needs to be very hard for them to guess
- Be easy for you to use – although that doesn’t mean you should be trying to remember it
Here are some bad passwords:
- Password1
- Letmein!
- Summer2024
- Any password you’ve used before (sorry, yes, even if you just change the number on the end)
And here are some better ones:
- Bicycle-Blender2Tooth!
- LongTreeDog
- Any password you make with your password software or a password generator
Common myths to forget:
- “It needs to be complicated.” Nope. A long, simple phrase is better than a short jumble of symbols.
- “I should try to remember all my passwords.” Definitely nope. That leads to reusing the same one repeatedly (which is exactly what hackers hope you’ll do).
Instead, use a password manager. It remembers everything for you and fills in your logins automatically. Apple devices have one built in, and our favourite app for managing all of this is 1Password.
To make up passwords, we like using Dinopass – it gives you random word combinations that are easy to type and still secure. Perfect for real humans.
So yes, Password123 is out. But OtterPencilBanana is surprisingly strong!
And if this all feels a little more than you’re able to take on, don’t worry—we’re here to help.
